A step toward strengthening public safety, account A step toward strengthening public safety, accountability and thoughtful judicial review.

The San Diego County District AttorneyDA Summer Stephan joined Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel and community members to mark Governor Newsom’s signing of AB 1959, which closes a gap in California’s juvenile resentencing laws brought to light by the 2001 Santana High School shooting.

The new law allows prosecutors to request a transfer hearing in certain serious cases involving individuals who committed crimes at age 14 or 15, were originally convicted in adult court and later became eligible for resentencing in juvenile court.

Our justice system must recognize the potential for rehabilitation while ensuring victims, survivors and communities are considered in decisions involving the most serious acts of violence.

DA Summer Stephan testified in support of AB 1959, advocating for a process that allows courts to consider the full circumstances of these cases.

We thank Assemblymember Dr. Patel for her leadership and Governor Newsom for signing this legislation into law.

AB 1959 reinforces the importance of balancing rehabilitation, accountability and public safety.
