San Diego County District Attorney
San Diego County District Attorney DA Summer Stephan announced hate crime charges today against a 20-year-old man for a series of graffiti incidents in the Lake Murray area last month that left multiple vehicles, fences, walls, and a residence spray painted with hate language, including swastikas, the N-word, and a racist and derogatory term in Spanish.Eli S. Peralta was arraigned today and pleaded not guilty to four felony counts including using terrorizing symbols on private property and vandalism. If convicted he faces five years in local custody.“The felony charges my office filed should make it clear that hate crimes are taken very seriously in San Diego County,” DA Stephan said. “Vandalizing someone’s property with swastikas and racist slurs is more than an act of vandalism. It is an act intended to intimidate, demean, and cause fear. That is not what we stand for in this community. We will stand with victims, hold those responsible accountable, and make clear that hate and intimidation have no place here.”The tagging incidents took place between September 9 and 10 in a 5-block radius of the Lake Murray neighborhood. The cumulative total damage is about $14,000.Peralta committed these acts with another person. Anyone with information on the second suspect is encouraged to contact San Diego Police. The District Attorney’s Office has a dedicated Hate Crimes Unit. In 2025 we filed hate crimes against 14 adult offenders. Ten were race based, three were religion-based and one was gender based.Peralta will next be in court on October 9 for a readiness hearing. He is out of custody and must stay away from all vandalism locations and not possess vandalism tools.Deputy District Attorney Mei Owen of the Hate Crimes Unit is prosecuting this case.EN ESPAÑOL: https://danewscenter.com/?p=10496 ...

San Diego County District Attorney @SummerStephan San Diego County District Attorney @SummerStephan shares an important reminder as we recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the lives that have been lost to domestic violence.

In this week’s DA News, DA Stephan discusses the toll of intimate partner violence on victims, their families, and their communities. She highlights the many forms abuse can take, and why leaving a dangerous situation can be difficult for survivors.

The DA’s office continues to work with community partners to provide support and resources for anyone struggling to leave a violent situation, including @ospsandiegocounty One Safe Place: San Diego County Family Justice Centers.

Watch this week’s update to learn how San Diego County is working to stand with survivors as they rebuild their lives.

Today, DA @SummerStephan joined the San Diego Domestic Violence Council @sd_dvc, San Diego Family Justice Center Your Safe Place, social service agencies, community leaders, and domestic violence survivors to mark the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Held at the new San Diego Family Justice Center, Your Safe Place, we heard stories of survivors escaping their abusers and held a candlelight vigil for the nine lives lost. Organizations and victim advocates, including our own Carmen Rodriguez from One Safe Place, were recognized for their contributions in helping victims of domestic violence.

Today, on the National Day of Remembrance for Murd Today, on the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, we remember Tori and her baby son, Dean—two lives taken far too soon by a convicted murderer.

Victims’ families suffer the ultimate loss: the loss of their loved ones to cruel violence. A courageous member of our community continues to grieve the murder of her beautiful daughter, Tori, and grandson, Baby Dean, at the hands of now convicted killer Dennis Potts in 2006.

Tori and Dean were more than victims. They were a daughter, a grandson, a mother, a family—and lives filled with love, hopes and dreams.

Their story is just one of many. Every day, we stand alongside victims’ families, seek justice for their loved ones and work to ensure their lives and legacies are never forgotten.

Today, we remember Tori and Dean. We honor their lives. And we stand with all the families who continue to carry the memories and grief of those they have lost.

Let us remember.

(This photo was shared with us by Dayna Herroz, Tori’s mother and Dean’s grandmother. It includes a predicted photo of what Baby Dean would look like today as a 21-year-old young man.)

In recognition of #HispanicHeritageMonth, the San In recognition of #HispanicHeritageMonth, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is highlighting employees whose experiences, backgrounds and dedication to public service help strengthen our office and the communities we serve.

For Legal Support Manager Rebecca Gomez, a career with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is rooted in a commitment to helping others and a family history that is deeply connected to an important chapter in San Diego and civil rights history.

Born and raised in San Diego, Rebecca began her career with the County working in Child Support after previously working in healthcare for Sharp and Kaiser. She joined the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office in 2002 and has spent more than two decades helping support the work of the office.

Today, she serves as the Legal Support Manager at the South Bay Branch, where she oversees the daily operations of the Legal Support Staff.

For Rebecca, her role is about more than overseeing operations. One of the most rewarding parts of her work is helping employees develop their careers and seeing people she once interviewed and hired go on to become professionals within the office.

Her connection to Hispanic Heritage Month is deeply personal. Her great-grandfather, Juan Gonzalez, was involved in the Lemon Grove Incident of 1931, a landmark San Diego County case in which Mexican American children had been separated from other students and sent to a separate school. The case resulted in a court ruling that prohibited the segregation of the Mexican American children.

Her grandmother and her siblings were among the children affected. Growing up, Rebecca heard stories from her grandmother about what happened and about her great-grandfather’s role in the legal fight.

That family history has given Hispanic Heritage Month a special meaning for Rebecca—one that goes beyond celebrating her heritage.

“It reminds me of the courage, strength and determination of the generations before me,” she said.

Why does testing sexual assault kits matter? In t Why does testing sexual assault kits matter?

In this week’s Weekly DA News, DA Summer Stephan revisits San Diego County’s work to eliminate the backlog of sexual assault kits.

By 2022, approximately 2,030 previously backlogged kits from 12 law enforcement agencies had been tested. Results showed that 735 contained DNA from someone other than the victim.

DA Stephan explains how DNA evidence can help identify unknown suspects or provide corroborating evidence when the suspect is known—and why sexual assault kits are an important piece of the evidence considered in these cases.

In recognition of #HispanicHeritageMonth, the San In recognition of #HispanicHeritageMonth, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is highlighting employees whose experiences, backgrounds and dedication to public service help strengthen our office and the communities we serve.

For Senior District Attorney Investigator Felix Salazar, a career dedicated to serving others began in the Imperial Valley and continued through service in the United States Marine Corps and more than two decades in law enforcement.
Born and raised in Brawley, California, Investigator Salazar joined the Marine Corps in 1998, serving until 2002. He began his law enforcement career that same year, working for the Brawley Police Department and later the Carlsbad Police Department in a variety of assignments.

In 2018, he joined the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. Today, he serves as a Senior District Attorney Investigator assigned to the East County Branch, where he conducts and assists with investigations involving cases prosecuted by the office.

His work includes locating and interviewing victims and witnesses, gathering and reviewing evidence, serving subpoenas, conducting follow-up investigations and working closely with Deputy District Attorneys and law enforcement partners to prepare cases for court.

For Senior Investigator Salazar, the work is ultimately about service.

“I have always been drawn to public service and to work that has a direct impact on people’s lives. My time in the Marine Corps reinforced the importance of teamwork, accountability, discipline and service to others. Law enforcement allowed me to continue that commitment while helping people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Joining the District Attorney’s Office allowed me to apply my experience to complex investigations and work closely with prosecutors and law enforcement partners. I value being part of a team that works to seek justice for victims, support their families and move cases forward.”
