Please join us in congratulating One Safe Place: S Please join us in congratulating One Safe Place: San Diego County Family Justice Centers Victim Advocate and Director of Human Trafficking Services and Awareness Marjorie Saylor, who was honored by Assemblymember Maggy Krell on Monday, August 10th in Sacramento for her tireless efforts supporting the Backpage Remission Program. This initiative created a historic opportunity for survivors of human trafficking who were exploited through Backpage.com and CityXGuide.com between 2004 and 2020 to seek financial recovery for harms they suffered, including medical and mental health expenses and lost wages connected to their exploitation.

From July 2025 through March 2026, Marjorie and One Safe Place partners worked in close collaboration to ensure that as many survivors as possible had access to this opportunity. The One Safe Place team met individually with survivors, helped them navigate the complicated application process, gather documentation, understand their losses, and take the difficult step of putting into words the financial and personal impact their victimization.

One Safe Place was one of only few organizations in California that mobilized to provide hands-on assistance to survivors seeking access to these funds and ultimately submitted claims representing the potential recovery of approximately $10-$15 million.

The significance of this work extends far beyond a dollar amount. For survivors whose exploitation generated enormous profits for others, the remission process offered an opportunity to reclaim something that had been taken from them: to have their losses recognized, their experiences acknowledged, and resources returned to the people who endured the harm. Marjorie said it best, “It was an extraordinary privilege to help survivors pursue that measure of justice.”
