Today, May 10, 2022 is the first National Fentanyl Today, May 10, 2022 is the first National Fentanyl Awareness Day.

Fentanyl is devastating communities across the country, including those in San Diego County. Mexican drug cartels have capitalized on the opioid epidemic and prescription drug abuse. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the cartels are manufacturing mass quantities of counterfeit prescription pills that contain fentanyl. Much of that supply comes into the United States via our southwestern border.

As a result, San Diego County has experienced a 1,300% increase in fentanyl-caused deaths between 2016 and 2020.

The intent of Fentanyl Awareness Day is to raise awareness about illicit fentanyl found in fake pills and street drugs. Illegally made fentanyl is the primary driver of the recent increase in overdose deaths, and fentanyl-involved deaths are the fastest growing among 14 to 23 year olds.

Fentanyl warning posters are available to the public at Https://www.SDPDATF.org.

If you or someone you know has substance use disorder or mental health issues, treatment is available, and recovery is possible. Contact the county’s Access and Crisis Line for resources and treatment options at 888-724-7240 or 2-1-1 San Diego.

The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office collected more than 100 new pairs of jeans as part National Denim Day 2022!👖
DA @SummerStephan and her team work tirelessly every day to help victims and survivors of adult and child sexual abuse. DA Stephan would like to recognize those who donated and coordinated donations of this new denim which will be available free to victims and survivors at the soon to be open boutique at the District Attorney’s One Safe Place North County Family Justice Center. She would like to thank District Attorney employees, One Safe Place partners with a big shout out to the Native Women’s Resource Center, the Humane Society and Milano Sliwa, a former student worker at the DA’s office who is now a law student at Thomas Jefferson School of Law.
👖Denim Day is an international protest against victim blaming. In the 1990s, a perpetrator was found guilty of raping a woman. An upper court overturned the conviction, concluding that the victim must have helped the perpetrator remove her jeans since jeans are difficult to remove, so she must have consented.
