At 6am this morning, 15 District Attorney Investig At 6am this morning, 15 District Attorney Investigators met up with 15 students from Vista Square Elementary School in Chula Vista. They had breakfast at Sea World, watched an amazing Dolphin show, then went to Target where the students got to spend $200 on holiday gifts.

This is part of the annual “Shop With A Cop” event where 300 well-deserving kids from around the county are teamed up with law enforcement agencies.

The DA’s Investigations Bureau participates every year and fundraises for the cause. We want to thank all those DA employees that bought raffle tickets earlier this year, bought “Shop With A Cop” swag or went to the barbecue to help make this wonderful event possible for the children!

San Diego County District Attorney @summerstephan San Diego County District Attorney @summerstephan announced today that defendant Johnny Hill, a member of a criminal street gang, was sentenced to 55 years to life plus an additional 26 years in prison in connection with a 2019 shooting that left one man dead and another injured.

Hill and co-defendant, Floyd Garrett, who will be sentenced on January 22, were found guilty by a jury of second-degree murder with a special allegation of personal gun use causing death, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm on September 14.

“Our office will never stop fighting to make neighborhoods safe from violence,” DA Stephan said. “Ernest Buchanan Jr. was a beloved member of the Alpha Project family and his own family, and his life was mercilessly taken without justification. San Diego Police Department Detectives working with the DA Gangs Unit put this case together piece by piece in order to obtain justice for the victims and hold the offenders accountable. Although this sentence will not bring back Ernest Buchanan Jr., we hope his family finds a measure of justice in the jury verdict and sentence in this case.”

The Alpha Project homeless shelter, located at 1700 Imperial Ave., lies within territory claimed by ‘Crip’ criminal street gang sets and is an area primarily used for gang related drug sales and acts of violence. Over the past two years, San Diego Police have responded to 6,187 calls involving violence: notably, seven homicides, 298 robberies, 1,280 assaults and 1,800 violent disturbances.

The Substance Use and Overdose Prevention Taskforc The Substance Use and Overdose Prevention Taskforce released annual report which indicates that opioid, fentanyl and methamphetamine-related deaths plateaued last year.
(SLIDE 2) The 2022 SUOPT annual report reveals that overdose deaths have plateaued at 1,300, a notable improvement compared to 2021, which saw 1,309 individuals succumb to overdose-related deaths, making it the first year in recent history that has not witnessed an increase in this devastating statistic.
“This report provides valuable information that lets us know that San Diego County’s multi-faceted approach is saving precious lives,” said @summerstephan , San Diego County District Attorney and the SUOPT Co-chair.” One of the most compelling data points that gives us hope for the future and re-energizes our daily battle against the deadly effect of illicit fentanyl is the substantial reduction of kids under the age of 18 losing their lives to this poison.”

The DA's Office is receiving an $810,000 grant fro The DA's Office is receiving an $810,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety @ots_ca for the tenth year in a row to prevent and prosecute impaired driving deaths and DUI-drug cases. The grant award comes as San Diego County fatal DUI numbers remain at an all-time high.

In 2022, 33 people were killed in 32 DUI-related crashes. So far in 2023, there have been 25 people killed.

“We have a specialized team of prosecutors and investigators who hold offenders accountable and work to deter impaired driving,” DA @summerstephan said. “The increase over the last few years of people in our community dying at the hands of impaired drivers is disturbing. As the holiday season approaches, people need to make responsible choices, use ride sharing services and keep their friends and family from getting behind the wheel if they are impaired.”

Data shows average blood-alcohol levels of drivers involved in Driving Under the Influence cases remain high at over .18%. Prosecutors say that more than half of individuals being arrested for driving under the influence have both alcohol and drugs in their system—a deadly combination.

The grant will allow the DA’s DUI Homicide Unit to continue its critical work. The unit, which launched in 2014, streamlines complex DUI cases by creating expertise within the DA’s Office. The specialized unit creates uniformity in sentencing among the four adult courthouses. In addition, the unit helps law enforcement adapt to changes in technology by having a designated DA Investigator who is trained in the latest techniques in collision reconstruction. Since its inception, the unit has prosecuted nearly 225 cases and they have received more than $4.5 million in funding from the Office of Traffic Safety.
