California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposit California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 36 to strengthen accountability, expand treatment opportunities, and improve public safety. Now, AB 2108 would dismantle key provisions of the voter-approved measure and return us to the days of rampant repeat theft in our stores. In this one-minute message, District Attorney Summer Stephan explains what’s at stake and encourages Californians to learn more and make their voices heard. Together, we can protect the will of the voters and continue building safer communities across California.

Let your voice be heard and email Senate Appropriations Chair Sabrina Cervantes’ Office at Bob.Franzoia@sen.ca.gov and Assemblymember Sharp-Collins’ office at Michael.Lucien@asm.ca.gov.

We want everyone to enjoy Comic-Con and all that S We want everyone to enjoy Comic-Con and all that San Diego has to offer, but not at the expense of others. Major events like Comic-Con attract visitors from around the world, and traffickers often seek to profit from the influx of people. Buying a human being for sex is not a victimless act. It fuels demand and drives human trafficking and exploitation. District Attorney Summer Stephan was proud to join Assemblymember Laurie Davies at a Senior Scam Stopper event in Oceanside recently to help community members recognize the warning signs of fraud and learn how to protect themselves from scams targeting older adults.

From imposter scams to gift card and cash payment schemes, awareness is one of the strongest tools we have to stop criminals before they strike.

Thank you to everyone who attended and took the time to learn how to keep themselves, their families, and their neighbors safe. Together, we can prevent fraud and protect our most vulnerable community members.

Deputy DA Christie Bowles speaks to reporters aft Deputy DA Christie Bowles speaks to reporters after a South Bay jury found Larry Millete, 44, guilty of first-degree murder of his wife, May “Maya” Millete, who disappeared from the family’s Chula Vista home on January 7, 2021.

The jury returned its verdict following a seven-week trial during which prosecutors presented extensive circumstantial evidence demonstrating that Larry Millete murdered his wife after she decided to end their marriage. The evidence showed a pattern of escalating control, obsession and planning that culminated in May’s disappearance. Veteran prosecutor, Christy Bowles, argued that although May’s remains have never been recovered, the evidence proved beyond a reasonable doubt that she was killed by her husband.

“Finally, justice has been served for Maya and for everyone who has carried the weight of her absence for more than five years,” District Attorney Summer Stephan said. “Our hearts are with Maya’s family, friends and especially her three children, who have endured an unimaginable loss. Justice delayed can never erase years of grief, but today’s verdict affirms that no victim is forgotten and no family is abandoned in our pursuit of the truth. I also want to express my deepest gratitude to Deputy DA Christy Bowles, her team, and to the jurors, who devoted weeks of their lives to carefully considering the evidence in this difficult and emotional case. Their commitment to the facts and to the rule of law reflects the very best of our justice system.”
