A violent confrontation witnessed by several child A violent confrontation witnessed by several children ended in tragedy. Now, a La Mesa man has been sentenced to 31 years to life in prison for the fatal stabbing of 59-year-old Albert Johnson at an El Cajon apartment complex in August 2025.

Stephen Mathews Coney was convicted of second-degree murder. During the trial, a child witness described seeing Johnson defend himself, fight for his life, and take his last breath.

While no sentence can undo the loss suffered by his loved ones, holding those responsible for violent crimes accountable is an important part of seeking justice.

Halloween can be one of the most exciting nights o Halloween can be one of the most exciting nights of the year, and every child deserves to enjoy it. 🎃👻

This week, One Safe Place South @ospsandiegocounty hosted the first annual trunk-or-treat celebration designed for families who have experienced abuse, trafficking, and domestic violence. For many survivors, late-night trick-or-treating can feel overwhelming or unsafe, this event offered a welcoming space to celebrate close to home.

Kids showed off their costumes, collected candy, and played games, while parents enjoyed the evening knowing they were surrounded by people who care. Thank you to our community partners and local law enforcement agencies who decorated their trunks, handed out treats, and made the night special.

Our support for survivors goes beyond the work we do in the courtroom. We also show up for families, helping them feel safe, supported, and part of the community.

Pollution doesn't stop at the border, and neither Pollution doesn't stop at the border, and neither should our efforts to understand who's responsible.

As rain threatens to worsen the cross-border pollution crisis, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office is seeking records from Mexico's environmental protection agency to examine potential industrial pollution affecting our region's waterways.

We're looking at inspection reports, complaints and enforcement actions involving industrial facilities in Tijuana, including businesses with U.S. ownership or parent companies.

Improvements to wastewater treatment are important progress. But we also need answers about other potential sources of pollution and whether businesses may be violating the law.

Consumer protection means protecting people from harm. We're following the evidence and evaluating the legal options available to hold businesses accountable.
